Designing Custom PCBs: How We Build Electronics from Scratch

At Xi-TEK, we don't just work with electronics β€” we build them from scratch. Custom PCB design is one of our core capabilities, and this guide walks you through exactly how we take a client idea and turn it into a finished, working circuit board.

What Is a Custom PCB?

A Printed Circuit Board (PCB) is the backbone of any electronic device. It provides both the mechanical structure and the electrical connections that allow components to work together. When clients come to us with a product idea β€” whether it's an industrial sensor, a smart device, or a custom controller β€” the PCB is where everything starts.

Did you know? Modern PCBs can have up to 50+ layers of circuitry stacked together β€” some smaller than a fingernail yet connecting hundreds of components.

Our PCB Design Process

  1. 01. Client consultation β€” understanding the electrical requirements and use case
  2. 02. Schematic design using EDA software (KiCad / EasyEDA)
  3. 03. Component selection and BOM (Bill of Materials) preparation
  4. 04. PCB layout β€” routing traces, placing components, design rule checks
  5. 05. Gerber file generation and manufacturing order
  6. 06. Soldering, assembly, and initial power-on testing
  7. 07. Final function testing and client delivery

Why Custom Over Off-the-Shelf?

Generic development boards like Arduino are great for prototyping, but for a finished product you need a board sized and optimised for your exact application β€” lower cost per unit, smaller form factor, and only the components you actually need.

Xi-TEK has designed boards for agricultural sensors, security panels, smart metering, and more. Every project starts with a conversation β€” reach out and let's talk about what you're building.
